The Burundian and Rwandan Business Community (BRC) in Mangochi has renovated and furnished five washrooms at Mangochi Police Station, restoring sanitation facilities that had remained unusable for several years due to their deteriorated condition.
The renovated facilities, valued at K19.7 million, were officially handed over during a ceremony held at the police station on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The initiative followed an appeal for support to improve sanitation facilities at the station.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, BRC Chairperson Emmanuel Mussah said the organisation decided to support the renovation after observing the poor condition of the washrooms.
Mussah said the project demonstrated the community’s commitment to working with government institutions for the benefit of society, while also strengthening relations between the police and the community.
Receiving the renovated facilities, Mangochi Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ulemu Kalua, expressed appreciation for the support.
Kalua said the renovation had come at a critical time, as the washrooms had been out of use for several years, creating an unpleasant situation and posing health risks to police officers.
He noted that the police station receives a large number of visitors daily, making proper sanitation essential. He said the renovation had restored a clean, safe and dignified environment for both officers and members of the public.
Kalua further called on other well-wishers to emulate the initiative by supporting the police in areas where assistance is needed to enhance service delivery.
Echoing Kalua’s sentiments, Group Village Headman Mtalimanja said the renovation demonstrated the important role community members can play in supporting government institutions and improving public service delivery.
He urged the police to take good care of the renovated facilities to ensure they remain functional and beneficial for many years to come.
