K320 MILLION HEALTH POST BRINGS RELIEF TO 20,000 PEOPLE IN THYOLO

Residents of Namileme in Thyolo are set to enjoy improved access to primary healthcare following the construction of a K320 million health post by Press Trust, ending the long journeys of up to 12 kilometres previously endured to access medical services.

Speaking at the official opening today, the area’s Member of Parliament and Minister of Local Government, Ben Phiri, commended Press Trust for its continued contribution to national development through various projects across Malawi.

However, Phiri issued a stern warning against vandalism and the theft of medical supplies, saying government would deal decisively with those involved.

Press Trust Trustee, Engineer Wilson Chirwa, said the facility was established to bring essential healthcare services closer to communities that have struggled to access medical attention due to distance.

Director of Health and Social Services, Dr. Mirriam Jere, said the health post would serve an estimated population of 20,000, with particular benefits for women and children.

The facility will provide family planning, child growth monitoring, under-five services, as well as antenatal and postnatal care.

Senior Chief Nchiramwera also applauded the development, saying it would significantly reduce the distance residents travel to access healthcare at the district hospital.

He urged community members to take responsibility for protecting the facility and safeguarding medical supplies against theft and vandalism.
