The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has called on parents, caregivers, health workers and community leaders to strengthen efforts to eradicate polio through vaccination, effective disease surveillance and timely response to outbreaks.
The call comes as the world commemorates World Polio Day on October 24, 2026, under the theme โOne Day. One Focus: Ending Polio.โ
In its message marking the day, the ministry says although significant progress has been made towards global polio eradication, more efforts are needed to ensure that every child is protected against the disease.
The ministry has urged parents and caregivers to ensure that children receive all recommended doses of the polio vaccine, alongside other routine vaccines, according to the recommended immunisation schedule.
It has also emphasised the need to strengthen disease surveillance, respond promptly to outbreaks and reach communities where some children may have missed vaccination.
The ministry says collective action involving health workers, community leaders, parents and development partners is essential to close immunity gaps and protect future generations from polio.
World Polio Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination and renew global commitment to ending the disease.
