K2.4 BILLION MAKANJIRA RURAL HOSPITAL OPENS TO IMPROVE EMERGENCY HEALTHCARE

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has described the newly opened Makanjira Rural Hospital as a game changer for communities in the area, particularly in improving access to emergency healthcare services.

Speaking during the facility’s opening on Monday, 26 October 2026, Phiri said the hospital would reduce the challenges residents face when seeking urgent medical attention, especially pregnant women and newborn babies.

He said patients previously had to travel to Mangochi District Hospital to access specialised emergency services, a journey often complicated by the poor condition of the Mangochi-Makanjira Road.

Phiri said the new hospital, which includes a Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care facility, would help address maternal and neonatal deaths by improving access to timely medical interventions.

The minister added that the facility would also contribute to broader development by bringing essential services closer to communities and reducing the burden of travelling long distances for healthcare.

Senior Chief Makanjira welcomed the hospital, describing it as an important development for local communities. However, the traditional leader urged government to rehabilitate the Mangochi-Makanjira Road to improve access to healthcare and other essential services.

The chief said improving the road network would complement the new hospital and help transform the livelihoods of people living in the area.

The K2.4 billion facility was funded by the government of Iceland, whose Director General of Foreign Affairs said the project builds on more than 35 years of cooperation with Mangochi District Council.

The partnership has since expanded to include Nkhotakota, Balaka and Machinga district councils, reflecting continued cooperation in supporting local development and improving access to essential services across Malawi.
