Minister of Mining, Thoko Tembo, MP, has welcomed the prospects of enhanced bilateral cooperation following a courtesy call by Egyptian Ambassador to Malawi, Her Excellency Rasha Hamdy, at the Ministry of Mining.
Tembo said Egypt’s interest in investing in Malawi’s mining sector presents an opportunity to attract expertise, technology and investment that could accelerate the development of the country’s mineral resources.
He highlighted the potential role of the Malawi Mining Investment Company (MAMICO) in facilitating government-to-government partnerships by working alongside Egyptian investors to translate the proposed cooperation into practical investment projects.
On her part, Ambassador Hamdy expressed Egypt’s interest in establishing business partnerships with Malawi, particularly in areas where Egyptian expertise and technology could support mineral development.
She identified gold, glass and cement production as key areas of interest for possible collaboration between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Director of Mines Bunnert Msika highlighted investment opportunities in gold, cement and glass production, noting that establishing a gold refinery in Malawi would significantly strengthen the country’s mineral processing capacity and promote value addition.
The proposed cooperation is expected to open up opportunities for investment, technology transfer and industrial development, while supporting Malawi’s efforts to maximise economic benefits from its mineral resources.
