MUTHARIKA ANNOUNCES ROLLOUT OF NZIKA DIGITAL NATIONAL ID WALLET

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced the rollout of the Nzika Digital National ID Wallet, describing the initiative as a major milestone in Malawi’s digital transformation agenda.

Mutharika said the initiative follows a directive he made during his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on 13 February, when he tasked the National Registration Bureau with implementing a digital identity wallet.

According to the President, the digital wallet is designed to make National ID verification more secure while reducing the need for citizens to carry physical identification documents when accessing public services.

The system allows Malawians to verify their identity using a smartphone, which the President says will make public service delivery more convenient and efficient.

Mutharika said the initiative demonstrates his Administration’s commitment to using technology to promote efficiency, inclusion and convenience in government services.

He also thanked development partners, particularly the United Nations Development Programme, for supporting the implementation of the digital identity initiative.

The President said the rollout represents part of broader efforts to modernise Malawi’s public services and strengthen digital governance.

He added that the government’s vision is to use innovation to strengthen governance, empower citizens and enhance public trust in state institutions.

The Nzika Digital National ID Wallet is therefore being presented by the Administration as an important step towards a more digitally enabled Malawi.
