Mulanje District Commissioner Chriss Nawata has assured residents that a recent bilateral meeting between Mulanje District in Malawi and Milanje District in Mozambique will help address cross-border challenges affecting local communities.
Nawata said the meeting focused on finding lasting solutions to cases of abuse reportedly experienced by Malawians from Mulanje when travelling to or conducting business in Mozambique.
He said both districts have agreed to establish a joint committee that will receive complaints from people who face abuse or other challenges while across the border.
According to Nawata, the committee will provide a formal platform for reporting incidents and ensure that concerns are handled through cooperation between the two districts.
The District Commissioner also urged residents to respect the laws and regulations of both Malawi and Mozambique whenever they engage in trade or other activities across the border.
He said adherence to the laws of both countries will help strengthen peaceful coexistence and improve relations between communities living along the shared border.
Nawata further said the partnership between Mulanje and Milanje is expected to enhance cooperation in trade, security, healthcare, education and sports for the benefit of people in both districts.
The bilateral meeting brought together the District Commissioners of Mulanje and Milanje, chairpersons of the two district councils, the Mozambican Ambassador to Malawi and senior government officials from both sides of the border.
The two districts reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cross-border cooperation and promoting peaceful relations to improve the welfare of communities in Malawi and Mozambique.
