Malawi has achieved a significant milestone in women’s leadership after Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator for Zomba Malosa, Hon. Grace Kwelepeta, was elected Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Africa.
Kwelepeta expressed deep gratitude following her election, describing the appointment as both a personal honour and a collective victory for women’s leadership, representation and empowerment across the African continent.
In her message, she thanked fellow women parliamentarians from across Africa for the trust and confidence they had placed in her.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been elected Chairperson of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Africa,” she said.
Kwelepeta pledged to undertake her new responsibilities with humility and determination, with a particular focus on amplifying the voices of women and advancing meaningful change across Africa.
She said her election should not be viewed merely as an individual achievement, but as a reflection of the growing importance of women’s participation and leadership in parliamentary affairs.
“This is not just a personal achievement; it is a collective victory for women’s leadership, representation and empowerment,” Kwelepeta said.
She further expressed confidence that, through collective efforts, African women parliamentarians can contribute towards building a stronger and more inclusive continent.
Her election has been welcomed as a proud moment for Malawi, placing a Malawian parliamentarian in a prominent leadership position within the Commonwealth parliamentary network.
Kwelepeta also extended a warm welcome to fellow parliamentarians visiting Malawi, highlighting the country’s reputation as the Warm Heart of Africa, where hospitality, warmth and togetherness remain central values.
The Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians is a network within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association that works to increase women’s representation in legislatures and strengthen women’s participation in political and parliamentary leadership.
Kwelepeta’s new role is therefore expected to provide an important platform for advancing discussions on women’s leadership, representation and empowerment across Africa.
