Police have arrested five Congolese nationals and two Malawians in an intelligence-driven operation conducted at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.
The seven suspects, aged between 18 and 36, were arrested for allegedly committing various offences, including robbery with violence, theft and unlawful wounding.
According to police, the arrests followed an operation aimed at restoring law and order at the refugee camp. The exercise was conducted after authorities received intelligence concerning suspected criminal activities in the area.
Police said the operation resulted in the apprehension of the seven individuals, who are currently in custody as investigations into the reported offences continue.
The suspects include five nationals from the Democratic Republic of Congo and two Malawians. Their identities have not yet been disclosed by the police.
Law enforcers said the arrests form part of efforts to strengthen security and maintain peace within Dzaleka Refugee Camp, which hosts a large refugee and asylum-seeking population.
Police have indicated that the suspects will face charges relating to the offences they are alleged to have committed.
Investigations are also expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.
All seven suspects are expected to appear before a court of law soon, where they will answer the charges levelled against them. They will remain innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
