Sunbird Hotels and Resorts will host the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, following their historic campaign at the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Scorchers are expected to arrive in Malawi this afternoon after making history by finishing as runners-up at the continental tournament and qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The team’s remarkable performance has sparked nationwide celebrations and united Malawians at home and abroad.
Sunbird Head of Sales, Marketing and Distribution, Temwa Kanjadza, said the hotel group was delighted to welcome the Scorchers and celebrate their outstanding achievement.
Kanjadza said Sunbird, as a proudly Malawian brand, believes in supporting the national team and celebrating moments that bring pride and joy to the country.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has expressed appreciation to Sunbird Hotels and Resorts for the gesture.
FAM Director of Operations Gomezgani Zakazaka thanked Sunbird for standing with the national team, saying the gesture demonstrates the important role corporate Malawi can play in supporting teams that bring pride to the country.
The Scorchers’ historic WAFCON campaign has provided another major milestone for Malawi football, with their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup expected to further inspire the growth of women’s football in the country.
