The Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee on the Chikangawa Plane Crash Inquiry will this Friday resume proceedings to conclude outstanding Phase One business before moving to Phase Two of its investigations.
According to a media advisory issued by the Committee today Wednesday, the session will take place at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, 31st July 2026.
The inquiry was instituted following the plane crash on 10th June 2024 which claimed the life of the late former Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, and eight other persons. The committee has been tasked with establishing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Chairperson of the Committee, Walter Nyamilandu Manda MP, said the upcoming sitting will focus on concluding witness hearings from Phase One.
“The Committee will briefly resume its proceedings to conclude the outstanding business from Phase 1 of Witness Hearings for the Inquiry,” the statement reads.
Two former senior security officials are expected to appear. They are Dokani Ngwira, former Director General of the National Intelligence Service, who will provide evidence on National Intelligence Gathering, Threat Assessment and Preparatory Activities. The second is Lieutenant General John Msonthi Jnr (Retired), former Deputy Army Commander (Operations), who will address Information Management, Operational Communications and Command Awareness.
In preparation for Phase Two, the Committee will meet again on 10th and 11th August 2026 to review work done in Phase One and plan for Phase Two witness hearings. Thereafter, Phase Two witness hearings are scheduled from 17th to 26th August 2026, focusing specifically on events that occurred on the actual day of the flight that resulted in the crash on 10th June 2024.
The Committee has assured the public and media that its proceedings will remain open unless resolved otherwise.
“The public and media are further advised that the Committee will continue to conduct its proceedings open to the public unless resolved otherwise by the Committee to conduct the proceedings in camera in accordance with the Standing Orders,” Manda stated in the press statement.
