The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) says its legal team is working to have a court injunction lifted after it temporarily halted the association’s leadership elections.
The injunction was obtained by one of the candidates contesting for the position of MAM president, preventing the elections, which were scheduled to take place on 26 July in Blantyre.
MAM spokesperson, Sheikh Dinala Chabulika, told Zodiak Online that the association remains hopeful the matter will be resolved soon.
“Once everything is in order, the elections committee will announce a new date for the polls,” said Chabulika.
Five candidates have expressed interest in contesting for the presidency. They are Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad, Sheikh Yusuf Chibwana, Sheikh Umar Nkachelenga, Dr. Imran Shareef Mahomed, and Sheikh Abdul Rahman Arab Allie.
The forthcoming elections follow a court ruling which declared that the 2021 MAM elections were not conducted in accordance with the association’s constitutional procedures, paving the way for fresh polls.
