GOVERNMENT COMMENDS OLD MUTUAL FOR BACKING REPATRIATION DRIVE

Government has commended Malawians and the corporate sector for their continued support towards the repatriation of citizens who were stranded in South Africa, describing the collective effort as a demonstration of national solidarity and compassion.

The praise comes as the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) announced that it has successfully facilitated the return of more than 30,000 Malawians, significantly surpassing the programme’s initial repatriation target.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Saidi, made the remarks during the presentation of a symbolic cheque worth K140 million donated by Old Mutual to support the return of an additional 140 Malawians.

Saidi said the government’s repatriation programme has benefited greatly from partnerships with the private sector and individuals who have contributed resources to assist citizens in distress.

He called on employers, financial institutions, development partners and local communities to support the reintegration of the returnees by providing employment opportunities, access to business financing and skills development initiatives.

According to Saidi, many of the returning Malawians acquired valuable skills and work experience while living abroad, making them an important resource for the country’s socio-economic development if given the right opportunities.

Speaking during the event, Chairperson of the Blantyre Old Mutual Foundation Trust, Taonga Manga, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the government’s humanitarian response through the repatriation programme.

Manga said Old Mutual recognizes the challenges faced by vulnerable Malawians and remains committed to working alongside government and other stakeholders to help affected citizens rebuild their lives after returning home.

The government has since encouraged more organisations and well-wishers to support the ongoing repatriation and reintegration efforts, emphasizing that collective action remains key to ensuring returnees are successfully resettled and empowered to contribute to national development.
