CHIPUNGU HAILS NET METERING AND E-MOBILITY FRAMEWORK AS KEY TO MALAWI’S ENERGY TRANSFORMATION

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chimwemwe Mazambuka Chipungu, has hailed the launch of the Net Metering Rules and E-Mobility Regulatory Framework, describing the initiative as an important step towards transforming Malawi’s energy sector.

Chipungu made the remarks on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, after attending the official launch held at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, alongside Minister of Energy Jean Mathanga.

The launch, held under the theme “Accelerating Malawi’s Energy Transformation through Regulated Electric Mobility and Distributed Generation,” was organised by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) and the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).

Chipungu said the initiative is expected to help reduce electricity costs, encourage private-sector investment in solar energy and minimise the country’s dependence on imported fuels.

He explained that net metering will allow households, businesses and institutions to generate their own electricity using solar power and feed surplus electricity into the ESCOM grid in exchange for electricity credits.

The arrangement is expected to help consumers reduce their electricity bills while promoting access to affordable and reliable energy.

Chipungu further said the introduction of the framework marks an important milestone in diversifying Malawi’s energy sources, encouraging investment in renewable energy and supporting the country’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy sector.
