Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Youth Director and Lilongwe Nyanja Member of Parliament, Baba Steven K. Malondera, has been elected Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committees of Africa (AFROPAC) for the next four years.
Malondera’s election marks a significant milestone in his parliamentary career and places him at the helm of an organisation that brings together Public Accounts Committees from across the African continent.
He was elected during a meeting held in Accra, Ghana, where representatives of Public Accounts Committees from various African countries are convening to elect new leaders who will steer the organisation over the next four years.
Before ascending to the chairmanship, Malondera served as AFROPAC’s General Secretary, a position that gave him valuable experience in the organisation’s leadership and operations.
His elevation to the top position is a continuation of his involvement in the organisation and its efforts to strengthen parliamentary oversight and promote accountability in the management of public resources across Africa.
Following his election, the visibly delighted Malondera took to his Facebook page to celebrate the achievement, posting the words: “Tatenga chinthuchi.”
His appointment comes at a time when African legislatures continue to emphasise the importance of effective public financial management, transparency and accountability in the use of taxpayers’ money.
As the new chairperson, Malondera is expected to provide leadership and direction to AFROPAC during his four-year tenure, working alongside representatives from different African countries to advance the organisation’s mandate.
His election is another notable development for Malawi’s parliamentary representation on the continental stage, with the Lilongwe Nyanja legislator now entrusted with leading an important African parliamentary oversight body.
