Blantyre Water Board (BWB) officials have appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee to explain the institution’s operations, including court cases, recruitment and dismissal of employees, staff suspensions and transfers.
The meeting follows a petition by BWB employees asking the parliamentary committee to investigate the board’s operations and address their concerns.
During the meeting, BWB Board Chairperson Stanley Chirwa told the committee that the board had taken an oath not to disclose certain operational procedures to unauthorised persons and asked for consideration because journalists were present.
However, committee chairperson Felix Njawala directed him to explain matters already in the public domain, including employment procedures, ongoing court cases and staff management decisions.
In response, Chirwa said he could not comment on ongoing court cases and did not have the relevant operational procedures readily available.
He asked for more time to retrieve the necessary information from the board’s documents before presenting it to the committee.
