ZOMBA POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH OF 23-YEAR-OLD MAN

Police in Zomba are investigating the death of Wells Kalimbika, 23, a motorcycle operator from Chindipha Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe, who died at Thondwe Health Centre on October 21, 2026.

Zomba Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Constable Andrew Mwale said Kalimbika allegedly ingested an aluminium phosphide tablet and later died while receiving treatment.

Medical personnel established the cause of death as organophosphate poisoning.

The incident followed a motorcycle accident on October 20, when Kalimbika reportedly hit a cow while transporting a customer to Mswaswa, damaging the motorcycle. The following day, repairs cost K60,000, which his employer paid, allowing Kalimbika to settle his share later.

Police investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. Meanwhile, police have encouraged people facing difficult situations to seek support from trusted family members, friends or health professionals.
