The Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament has directed the Board of Directors of Blantyre Water Board (BWB) to prepare a detailed presentation after expressing dissatisfaction with their responses on the institution’s governance procedures.

The Committee summoned the directors to explain the principles and procedures that informed key governance decisions at the water utility, including the dismissal of its Chief Executive Officer, Yeremia Chihana.

PAC Chairperson Honourable Felix Njawala said that although the Board had submitted documents to the Committee, the directors had failed to adequately address all the issues requiring clarification.

“We are dissatisfied with the progress of the discussion. Although the Board has submitted documents, its directors have not adequately addressed all the issues we wrote to them, requiring clarification,” said Njawala.

He said the Committee had granted the directors additional time to prepare a comprehensive presentation addressing the outstanding concerns.

Njawala added that the Committee would reconvene with the BWB Board of Directors after the presentation had been prepared to allow further discussions on the matter.

The BWB delegation was led by Board Chairperson Stanley Chirwa.

The engagement forms part of Parliament’s oversight role in examining governance procedures and promoting accountability in public institutions.
