The Malawi First movement has suspended its planned demonstrations scheduled for November 5, 2026, following discussions with government representatives.
The movement had threatened to hold nationwide demonstrations if the government failed to address several challenges affecting Malawians.
On October 29, the movement’s leader, Bon Kalindo, announced that the government had been given seven days to address pressing concerns, including food shortages, persistent power outages, water supply challenges and foreign currency shortages.
The movement also demanded a reduction in toll gate fees, which currently stand at K2,000.
Responding to the demands, Minister of Justice Charles Mhango said the government would engage the concerned parties and provide responses within two weeks.
Mhango, however, assured Malawians that some of the challenges would be addressed in the shortest possible time, while others would require more time to find lasting solutions.
The suspension of the demonstrations follows the government’s commitment to engage the movement and work towards addressing the concerns raised.
