PRESIDENT MUTHARIKA ADMINISTRATION STEPS UP EFFORTS TO END ILLEGAL MINING IN MALAWI

LILONGWE — The government has stepped up efforts to curb illegal mining in Malawi, with the Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) urging small-scale miners to obtain the required licences.

Speaking in Karonga, MMRA Senior Inspection and Enforcement Officer Maxwell Kudzala said licensing would allow miners to operate legally while enabling authorities to monitor mining activities and promote responsible mineral extraction.

The Authority is also encouraging small-scale miners to form cooperatives, which could help them access licences, operate within the law and improve their contribution to the formal economy.

Government says stronger regulation and enforcement will help ensure that Malawi benefits from its mineral resources through increased employment, investment and household incomes, while also protecting communities and the environment.

The renewed focus on formalising small-scale mining comes amid continued concerns over illegal and unregulated mineral extraction across the country.
