TWO MOZAMBICANS ARRESTED, FOUR GUNS RECOVERED AT KAMUZU BRIDGE

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested two Mozambican nationals for allegedly possessing firearms and offensive weapons illegally at the Kamuzu Bridge Roadblock in Chikwawa.

The suspects have been identified as Julio Aromado, 25, and Steven George, 30. Police say the two were found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, two Star pistols, a Heckler & Koch firearm, a pick, a panga knife and a pound hammer.

According to a statement issued by the MPS Public Relations Office at Police Headquarters in Lilongwe and signed by Senior Superintendent Gladys Chiwaula, the two were arrested on 27 September 2026.

The statement says the suspects attempted to bypass the roadblock at Kamuzu Bridge, prompting officers on duty to pursue them. Police subsequently arrested the two and recovered the weapons.

MPS has warned that illegal firearms and offensive weapons have no place in communities, stressing that anyone found in possession of such items will face the full force of the law.

The police have also reminded the public that the amnesty period for surrendering illegal firearms remains in effect. Members of the public who are in possession of illegal firearms have been urged to voluntarily hand them over to the police.

Meanwhile, MPS has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public safety, protecting citizens’ rights and maintaining peace and order across the country.

The police have further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police formation.
