MOTHERS DAY CELEBRATED WITH CALL TO CHERISH MOTHERS

Malawi today, 15th October, celebrates Mother’s Day, a special day dedicated to honouring mothers for their love, sacrifice and tireless efforts in raising families and shaping the future of the nation.

Mothers are described as the backbone ofevery home, waking up early to care for children, working in fields and markets, and providing comfort and guidance, often putting the needs of their families before their own health and happiness.

As the country celebrates, attention has also turned to the health of mothers in hospitals across Malawi, where many continue to face challenges including long distances to facilities, shortage of health workers and lack of essential supplies that put their lives at risk during pregnancy and childbirth.

Government says it is working to improve maternal health through free maternity services in public hospitals, upgrading maternity wings, deploying more midwives and nurses, providing maternal waiting homes in rural areas and strengthening ambulance and referral systems to ensure timely care.

Health experts say these efforts have helped increase hospital deliveries and reduce deaths of mothers and newborns, but more needs to be done to ensure every woman, regardless of where she lives, accesses quality, respectful and safe maternal care.

Beyond health facilities, communities are being urged to support expectant mothers with proper nutrition, rest, early antenatal attendance and psychosocial support, recognizing that the well-being of a mother directly impacts the health of her child and family.

For many Malawians, Mother’s Day is more than just gifts and flowers, it is a reminder to appreciate and protect mothers every day, as they remain the pillars of love, resilience and unity in society.

As celebrations continue across the country, Malawians are called to honour mothers not only today but always, by valuing their contribution, safeguarding their health and giving them the respect and love they truly deserve.
