Amid ongoing discussions about alleged corruption and misconduct in the legal profession, DNC Chambers has added its voice, urging the relevant authorities to investigate the widespread allegations of corruption within the legal profession and judiciary in Malawi.
The issue surfaced when the Law Society of Malawi, alongside other organizations and legal professionals like Counsel Alexious Kamangila, raised concerns about corruption and misconduct within the legal system.
In a statement dated January 22, 2024, and signed by Counsel Davis Njobvu, DNC Chambers highlighted that the public holds the legal profession and judiciary in high regard, and any allegations of corruption risk damaging their reputation.
“The legal profession is built on honour and integrity. Members of the public place great faith and trust in legal practitioners to represent them professionally, fearlessly, and fairly. Every lawyer has a duty to uphold the Code of Ethics and promote respect for the law,” the statement read.
The statement also expressed concern about allegations of collusion between legal practitioners and judges to predetermine case outcomes, describing such claims as deeply troubling and a serious threat to public confidence in the justice system.
DNC Chambers emphasized the judiciary’s critical role in providing independent, fair, and balanced resolutions to disputes, which affect various groups, including vulnerable individuals and businesses.
The firm further noted the significant harm done when disputes are decided unfairly, leading to “untold misery” for innocent parties. It called on relevant bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Judicial Service Commission, and the Office of the Chief Justice to thoroughly investigate the allegations to restore public trust in the judiciary.
DNC Chambers reiterated the need for legal practitioners and judicial officers to conduct themselves with integrity and called for all investigations to follow due process. The Women Lawyers Association also joined the call for action, emphasizing the importance of addressing the alleged corruption and misconduct within the legal profession.
