LEGISLATOR URGES MULTI-STOREY BUILDINGS TO TACKLE URBAN LAND SHORTAGE

Lilongwe City East legislator George Zulu has urged the government to consider constructing multi-storey buildings to address the growing land shortage in urban areas.

Zulu made the appeal to the Minister of Basic Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Willima, emphasizing the need to add additional floors to existing schools.

“We cannot continue building only single-storey schools and facilities while facing space constraints in cities. It’s time to start constructing upwards,” Zulu said.

He warned that failure to act now could lead to higher costs in the future, as the government might be forced to demolish existing buildings to accommodate additional floors.

“I spoke with the Minister, and she agreed we should act before it’s too late,” Zulu added.

In response, Minister Willima said the proposal will be discussed with other cabinet ministers, including those from the Ministry of Lands.
