MEC LAUNCHES 2025 CAMPAIGN PERIOD, URGES PEACEFUL AND RESPECTFUL ELECTIONS

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially launched the 2025 general election campaign period, which will run from July 14 to September 14.

Speaking at the launch, MEC Chairperson Anabell Mtalimanja called on all aspiring candidates to campaign peacefully, present their manifestos with respect, and avoid insults or acts of violence.

She cautioned that any campaign activities beyond the September 14 deadline will attract consequences. Mtalimanja also clarified that MEC commissioners will attend political rallies strictly as observers and not to support any candidate or party.

She further urged political parties to respect women candidates and to report any incidents of discrimination.

Mtalimanja commended security agencies and civil society organizations for their role in promoting peaceful and credible elections, and reminded traditional leaders to remain politically neutral throughout the campaign.

Echoing the same sentiments, Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) Board Chairperson Ben Chakhame appealed for unity, urging Malawians not to let the September 16 elections divide the nation. He encouraged citizens to reject violence and inflammatory language.
