MUTHARIKA PICKS JANE ANSAH AS RUNNING MATE, PROMISES REAL MANIFESTO

As the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) continues to receive nomination papers for the September 16 general elections, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika on Friday presented his papers at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

Before signing the Electoral Code of Conduct, Mutharika surprised many by announcing retired Justice Dr. Jane Ansah as his running mate.

“I wanted someone mature, well-experienced, God-fearing, and with love for Malawians. I have been praying for God’s guidance on who to pick,” he said.

Mutharika also promised Malawians that the DPP manifesto will be launched within seven days, assuring voters of clear and realistic plans.

On the possibility of a political alliance with other opposition parties, the former president said talks were ongoing, with the objective of uniting to remove the current leadership.

The choice of Jane Ansah came as a surprise to many DPP supporters, who had speculated that UTM President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe or Mary Chilima, widow of the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima, would be his running mate.

Meanwhile, other candidates independent aspirant Milward Tobias and Frank Mwenifumbo of the National Development Party (NDP)—were also expected to present their nomination papers on Friday.

MEC began receiving nomination papers on Thursday, July 24, 2025, and the process will continue until July 30, 2025.
