HIGH COURT UPHOLDS ELECTION OF MP KHADIJA LEAH CHUNGA

Lawyer Silvester Ayuba James today shared an update from the High Court in Lilongwe, moments after the court delivered its ruling on a petition challenging the election of Hon. Khadija Leah Chunga, Member of Parliament for Kamphuno Constituency (Chinsapo).

James said the photo he shared had been taken “a minute ago” at the court, showing the MP standing beside him, smiling, after the judgment. Chunga, who won the parliamentary seat as an Independent candidate, had her victory contested by Dr. Clement Mwake of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

According to James, the High Court dismissed the petition and upheld Chunga’s election, awarding costs against the petitioner. “Tidye money,” he remarked light-heartedly.

He added that a nullification of her election would have been painful for him not only professionally but personally, noting that Chunga is a vibrant and actively engaged young legislator, known for her full participation in parliamentary proceedings and her serious approach to representation despite her simplicity and sharpness.

“Apapa tikukalowanso ku Parliament limodzi this afternoon,” he said, adding that he reminded her he would “send the bill this evening.”
