MALGA PRESIDENT CALLS FOR FAIR FUNDING FOR COUNCILLORS

The Chairperson of the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA), Isaac Jomo Osman, has appealed to the Ministry of Finance to consider councillors when allocating government funds, saying they deserve adequate support.

Osman said councillors work directly with communities on a daily basis and therefore need sufficient financial resources to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

He made the remarks during a public consultation meeting on the 2026/2027 national budget, which was held in the city of Mzuzu.

According to Osman, the role of councillors is critical in ensuring that government policies and development programs reach grassroots communities.

He emphasized that there is no conflict or hostility between councillors and Members of Parliament.

Instead, he explained that the main challenge lies in financial constraints, which often make it difficult for councillors to perform their duties effectively.

Osman also urged the government to construct a modern market in Karonga District.

He noted that Karonga borders Tanzania, and a modern market could generate significant revenue to help sustain the operations of the district council and boost local economic activity.
