DALITSO KABAMBE RESIGNS FROM DPP

Malawian economist Dalitso Kabambe, who has been aspiring to become president in the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has left the party.

In a statement, the former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor said he had already informed the party’s president, Arthur Peter Mutharika, about his decision.

“After much reflection and consideration, I have decided to resign as a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, effective July 14, 2024,” reads part of the statement.

He said the decision to quit the DPP was not made lightly.

Kabambe further extended his best wishes to Prof. Peter Mutharika and the entire DPP family as he moves forward to communicate his next course of action in due time.

Before his resignation, Kabambe expressed his intention to run for the DPP presidential candidacy.

Meanwhile, DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba has dismissed allegations that Kabambe left the DPP just because Mutharika will be contesting in the 2025 elections.

However, Namalomba said he cannot say anything about the development, stating that everyone has the right to join the party of their choice.

“People leave this church and join another one. The same applies to marriage or politics,” said Namalomba.

Kabambe’s resignation comes just months after the DPP fired some of its top officials from the party, including Kondwani Nankhumwa, who formed his own party, Member of Parliament for Mwanza Central Nichorus Dausi, and Member of Parliament for Zomba Chisi Mark Botomani.
