The second deputy publicity secretary for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Ken Msonda, has condemned opposition parties for repeatedly calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja.
Msonda labeled the demands as undemocratic, uncivilized, and primitive, accusing the opposition of displaying political immaturity. He also defended Mtalimanja’s appointment, noting that it was made by the neutral Malawi Judicial Commission.
“It’s unfortunate that those we trust to guide and lead us on national matters are misleading us for tribal, financial, and political personal gains,” Msonda stated.
He alleged that the opposition, led by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), hired individuals to challenge the legality of MEC and the National Registration Bureau’s voter registration exercise in court.
According to Msonda, the DPP has resorted to various tactics to gain public sympathy ahead of the 2025 elections, including invoking a military plane crash, holding candlelight memorials, stoning the presidential motorcade, and exploiting issues like fuel shortages and the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha as campaign strategies.
“Justice Annabel Mtalimanja is not guilty and will remain in her position as upheld by the constitution and the courts,” he concluded.
