MALAWI SEEKS $55M TO UPGRADE AIRPORTS, INTRODUCES DEVELOPMENT CHARGES

The Civil Aviation Authority has revealed that over $55 million is needed to upgrade Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe and Chileka Airport in Blantyre to meet international standards by 2026.

Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Madalo Nyambosye, told the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament that aviation security is highly regulated, and Malawi must comply with global standards.

“Key requirements include regular training for personnel handling equipment, upgrading aeronautical services, installing essential terminal equipment, and improving runway conditions,” Nyambosye said.

The ministry, in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority, has prioritized KIA, requiring $35 million, while Chileka needs over $20 million.

To raise funds, authorities have introduced an Airport Development Charge $10 for international passengers and $2 for domestic travelers.

Legal Affairs Committee Chairperson Dr. Albert Mbawala supported the charges and suggested increasing them to align with international rates. He emphasized the urgency of upgrading the country’s airports and urged authorities to explore alternative funding sources beyond passenger fees.

As part of the security improvements, the Civil Aviation Authority also plans to construct perimeter fences around the airports.
