WORLD BANK APPROVES K260 BILLION GESD PROJECT FUND

The World Bank has approved a proposal by the Malawi Government to include all urban city councils among the beneficiaries of the Bank-funded Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) 2.0 project, pegged at $150 million (approximately K260 billion).

Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri said this is the result of series of engagements and a meeting he held with World Bank officials on Tuesday.

The funding remains performance-based, rewarding councils that meet set standards in governance, service delivery, and financial management.

Phiri added that all eight urban city councils have now qualified for the grants.

Executive Director for the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA), Hadrod Mkandawire, has urged city, municipal, and town councils to address existing inefficiencies before accessing the funds, saying this will strengthen their capacity to deliver on development goals.
