NKHATA BAY COUNCIL CHAIR JOINS MALGA PRESIDENCY RACE

NKHATA BAY COUNCIL CHAIR JOINS MALGA PRESIDENCY RACE

Nkhata Bay Council chairperson Hannock Kachingwe has formally entered the race for the presidency of the Malawi Local Government Association (Malga).

Kachingwe is challenging Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman and Zomba City Mayor Christopher Jana for the top position.

The highly anticipated Malga elections are scheduled to take place tomorrow.

The polls will be held at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the elections, Kachingwe said Malga needs leadership that understands the realities on the ground.

He argued that district councils face the most severe development challenges across the country.

According to Kachingwe, these challenges make it essential for Malga to be led by someone drawn from the district councils.

“Communities in district councils are facing acute developmental shortfalls, hence the need for a Malga president from the districts,” he said.

Kachingwe also pledged to improve the conditions of service for councillors if elected.

He said his priorities would include advocating for duty-free vehicle loan schemes for councillors.

Kachingwe cited safety risks associated with motorbike travel and stressed the need for reliable transport for council chairpersons.

He concluded by saying councillors deserve respect, dignity and adequate resources to effectively carry out their duties, which often require urgent travel, including on weekends.
