The Saulos Klaus Chilima (SKC) Foundation, in partnership with C’ Steinweg Bridge Company, has planted 800 trees at Nanjati Primary School in Lilongwe as part of efforts to promote environmental conservation.
Speaking during the tree-planting exercise on Tuesday, Chairperson of the SKC Foundation, Mary Chilima, said the initiative is one of the foundation’s contributions toward restoring the country’s degraded environment.
Chilima noted that deforestation remains a major challenge in Malawi and called for collective action from organizations, schools, and communities to safeguard natural resources.
She further urged learners at Nanjati Primary School to take responsibility for caring for the newly planted trees to ensure they grow and survive.
Chilima emphasized that instilling environmental responsibility in young people is critical for long-term sustainability and climate resilience.
Representing the school’s head teacher, Esther Banda welcomed the initiative and assured stakeholders that the school would take good care of the trees.
Banda said the school will use its environmental conservation club to monitor and nurture the trees as part of practical learning for pupils.
Meanwhile, the government, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change under the Department of Forestry, launched the 2025–2026 National Tree Planting Season on December 15 this year, targeting the planting of 41 million trees nationwide.
