Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja has said interfaith gatherings played a crucial role in promoting national unity during the 2025 elections by encouraging citizens to embrace peace and coexistence.

Mtalimanja observed that activities organized by religious leaders sent a strong message that elections should serve as a unifying process rather than a source of division among Malawians.

She noted that prayers and fasting initiatives conducted by various faith groups contributed significantly to safeguarding peace before, during and after the electoral process.

According to Mtalimanja, the involvement of religious institutions helped create an environment that encouraged tolerance, dialogue and respect among citizens with different political views.

The MEC Chairperson also commended faith-based organizations for their support in voter education, describing their contribution as instrumental in raising awareness on electoral rights and responsibilities.

She further praised religious leaders for encouraging eligible citizens to register as voters and participate responsibly in the elections, thereby strengthening democratic governance in the country.

Mtalimanja made the remarks in Lilongwe on Thursday during the opening of a review meeting on the 2025 elections involving selected religious leaders from across the country.

The meeting is expected to assess the role played by religious institutions during the elections and explore ways of strengthening collaboration between MEC and faith leaders in future electoral processes.
