‎NSANJE POLICE INVESTIGATES DROWNING DEATH Of UNIDENTIFIED GIRL CHILD

Nsanje police station is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of an unknown female child whose body was discovered floating in the shire river at Alfazema village in the area of Traditional Authority Malemia, Nsanje district.

‎The incident occurred on 21 June 2026 at around 6:00am and was reported to police by Mr Juma Anusa, 47, of Alfazema village.

‎According to reports, Mr Anusa’s wife had gone to the river to fetch water when she noticed the body of a young girl, estimated to be about four years old, floating in a small dam that forms part of the shire river. Shocked by the discovery, she immediately returned home and informed her husband.

‎Mr. Anusa then mobilized fellow villagers who went to the scene and confirmed the sighting before he formally reported the matter to Nsanje police station.

‎Following the report, Nsanje police officers, and a clinical officer visited the scene. The body was retrieved from the water and a postmortem examination was conducted. Results revealed that the cause of death was suffocation secondary to drowning.

‎The body is currently being kept at Nsanje district hospital mortuary pending identification and collection by relatives if known.

‎Nsanje police have since launched investigations to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances that led to her death. Members of the public who may have information regarding a missing young girl are encouraged to report to the nearest police station.
