CHINESE EMBASSY STRENGTHENS PARLIAMENT RELATIONS THROUGH DONATION

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Malawi by donating cash and assorted items to the Parliament of Malawi.

Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Sameer Suleman, MP, on Wednesday received the donation, which included US$20,000 in cash, sofas, television screens, and electric scooters.

Presenting the donation, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Her Excellency Ms. Lu Xu, said the gesture demonstrates China’s continued support for Malawi’s Parliament and its commitment to seeing the institution flourish in carrying out its constitutional mandate.

She expressed confidence that the donated items would improve Parliament’s working environment while reinforcing the long-standing friendship between the two countries.

Ambassador Lu Xu further emphasized that the donation reflects China’s solidarity with Malawi and its continued support for national development initiatives.

Receiving the donation, Speaker Suleman thanked the Chinese government for its unwavering partnership, describing the contribution as another milestone in the strong cooperation shared between the two nations and their parliamentary institutions.

“This donation will directly support Members of Parliament and staff in delivering improved services to the people of Malawi,” he said.

The Speaker particularly welcomed the US$20,000 cash donation, noting that it comes at a critical time as Parliament prepares to host the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region) Conference, scheduled for 9–16 August 2026 in Lilongwe.

He said the conference is expected to attract more than 300 delegates from across Africa, adding that the financial support will help bridge funding gaps while enabling Malawi to successfully host the continental event.

“The conference presents an opportunity not only to strengthen parliamentary cooperation but also to showcase Malawi’s tourism potential and rich cultural heritage to international visitors,” Suleman said.

He also encouraged the Chinese government to continue supporting Malawi’s sustainable development agenda, particularly in the mining sector, which he said is undergoing significant reforms and expansion.
