TWO WORKERS DIE IN SEPTIC TANK INCIDENT AT KOMBUCHA COMPANY IN LILONGWE

Two general workers at a Kombucha drink production company in Njewa Industrial Area, Lilongwe, have died after drowning in a septic tank.

Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Hastings Chigalu confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday , July 12, 2026, around 13:00 hours.

The deceased have been identified as Feedson Thunga, 23, of Njonja Village, Traditional Authority Machete in Dedza District, and Jamison Lewis, whose details are yet to be established.

According to police, Thunga was assigned to unblock a septic tank at the company premises. During the operation, he became trapped inside and drowned.

“Upon seeing his colleague in distress, Lewis entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him. He also became overwhelmed and failed to get out.”, Chigalu explained

Fellow workers later retrieved the two men, but they were already dead.

Chigalu said detectives from Lilongwe Police Station visited the scene and have launched investigations.

However,The bodies were taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death.

“This is a tragic incident. We urge employers to ensure workers have proper safety equipment when handling hazardous tasks such as septic tank cleaning,” Chigalu said.

Thunga hailed from Dedza District. Efforts to establish Lewis’s home details are underway.
