Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Alfred Gangata, has commended the Malawi National Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, for reaching the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite a 3-0 defeat to Cameroon.
On his Facebook page, the Minister said yesterday’s result hurts, but it does not mean the team has failed.
He said the loss on the scoreboard cannot erase the discipline, heart and courage the Scorchers showed from the first game to the final. From the group stages to the semi-finals, Malawi battled, defended with pride and attacked with belief.
“You came to this tournament and fought like warriors. You reached the final and told Africa and the world that Malawi belongs among the best.For many watching at home, it was the first time they saw Malawi compete at that level, and it proved how far women’s football has come.”,Gangata explained
The Minister said a trophy would have been sweet, but the real victory is bigger and what they have achieved is bigger than one match ,they have inspired a nation, made history, and opened a new chapter for women’s football in Malawi and across schools and communities, young girls now have new role models to follow.
He said the journey is a milestone that will stay forever. “And above all, for the first time in history, Malawi has qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. That is history that no one can take away from you. You carried the flag with honor and gave millions a reason to dream bigger.”,
Turning to the players, his message was personal. “Keep your heads high. Wipe away the tears and be proud of how far you have come. Malawi is proud of you. I am proud of you. The journey has only begun.” He called on Malawians to respond with support, not blame.
With determination, Gangata closed by reminding them of their spirit. “We came with power, we fought with power, and we will rise again with even greater power.”
The minister promised continued investment in youth, sports and culture so the next generation has even more to build on.
