Zomba Central Prison has registered significant progress in implementing its Restorative Justice and Peace Building Programme, which seeks to promote rehabilitation, reconciliation and the successful reintegration of inmates into society.
According to the public relations officer for Zomba central prison segearnt Yusuf Daniel Ayuba says the programme equips inmates with skills to manage conflicts, repair relationships with victims and their families, and use family mediation as a means of resolving disputes and promoting healing.
As part of the initiative, the prison has also been conducting community sensitisation campaigns to encourage communities to embrace restorative justice as a way of addressing crime, strengthening relationships and reducing repeat offending.
The programme further prepares inmates for life after prison by combining rehabilitation with practical skills training, enabling them to acquire knowledge and skills that can help them become self-reliant after serving their sentences.
In line with the new Prison Act, Zomba Central Prison is placing greater emphasis on transferring skills and knowledge to inmates so that they can create livelihoods and generate income through lawful activities once they return to their communities.
