Malawi will observe the 2026 Early Childhood Development (ECD) Week of Advocacy and Awareness from 2nd to 6th October, 2026, the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare has announced.
The announcement was made by the Secretary for Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Esmie Tamanda Kayinja, PhD, in an interview with local media.
According to Kayinja, the week will officially be launched by the Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Thom Navicha, MP, on 2nd October at Jali, Traditional Authority Mbambo, in Zomba District.
This year’s commemoration is being held under the theme: “Championing Children; Investing Today, Securing Tomorrow.”
The Ministry says the theme underscores the importance of investing in children during their early years and calls for concerted efforts to ensure that every child has an opportunity to grow, learn and develop in a safe, supportive and enabling environment.
“During this week, we seek to raise awareness of the importance of early childhood development, promote collective action among families, communities and stakeholders, and advocate for increased investment in children’s wellbeing, protection, care and development during their critical early years,” Kayinja said.
Activities lined up for the week will bring together experts, implementers, academics and other stakeholders through a conference and a visit to an ECD centre to appreciate community and caregiver initiatives supporting children’s growth, care and early learning.
The Ministry has encouraged all stakeholders to use the week as an opportunity to strengthen collective action towards giving every child the best possible start in life.
This includes ensuring access to proper nutrition, healthcare, protection, responsive care, stimulation and quality early learning.
The Ministry says investing in the early years lays a strong foundation for a healthier, more productive and prosperous Malawi.
