FAM DENIES ABANDONING SCORCHERS PLAYERS OVER TRANSPORT

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has clarified circumstances surrounding pictures circulating on social media showing some Malawi National Women’s Football Team players, the Scorchers, waiting for transport to their respective homes after arrival from an official assignment.

In a media release dated 15th October 2026, FAM said it would like to assure the public that transport arrangements were made for all players upon their arrival at Bakili Muluzi International Airport and Kamuzu International Airport.

According to the Association, the images that sparked public concern on social media were misinterpreted, as the Association had fully organized logistics for the safe movement of players from the airports.

FAM explained that however, some players opted to be dropped off at designated stages, where they preferred to arrange their own transport to their respective homes, a personal choice that created the impression they had been left stranded.

They have also clarified that the players were not abandoned, as transport had already been provided for their safe movement from the airports, dismissing claims of negligence and poor welfare management.

The Association says as part of its Football Transformation Agenda, it remains committed to prioritising the welfare, safety and well-being of players and all key stakeholders, including national team players.

FAM further said the Association will continue to ensure that appropriate logistical arrangements are made for national teams during official assignments to avoid such misunderstandings in future.

The clarification comes amid growing public scrutiny on welfare of national teams, with FAM urging the public and media to seek official information before drawing conclusions from social media pictures.
