The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has welcomed back its AS550 A2 Fennec helicopter following a comprehensive overhaul by Airbus in South Africa, strengthening the Malawi Air Force’s operational capabilities.
The helicopter was officially received at Lilongwe Air Base on Monday, 26 October 2026, in a development expected to enhance air mobility, aerial surveillance, and rapid response operations.
Speaking during the reception ceremony, Chief of Defence Force General George Alexander Jaffu (Jnr) described the Fennec as a versatile aircraft that supports troop and equipment transportation, reconnaissance, disaster response, and access to hard-to-reach communities.
General Jaffu said the helicopter’s return would improve operational readiness and enable the MDF to respond more effectively to security challenges, emergencies, and humanitarian needs.
He also thanked President Arthur Peter Mutharika, who is Commander-in-Chief of the MDF, for supporting efforts to maintain military aircraft and ensure their continued airworthiness.
The helicopter’s return marks an addition to the Malawi Air Force’s existing fleet, providing greater flexibility for military operations and civilian support missions.
Its restoration also highlights ongoing efforts to maintain the Defence Force’s operational equipment in support of national security and public service
