DZOMBE URGES MALAWIANS TO SUPPORT WAR VETERANS AS POPPY WEEK IS LAUNCHED

Renowned Malawian business tycoon Napoleon Dzombe has called on Malawians to unite and contribute towards improving the welfare of war veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars.

Dzombe made the appeal on Friday in Lilongwe during the launch of Poppy Week, where he attended as Guest of Honour following an invitation from the Malawi Defence Force.

He said many surviving war veterans were facing challenges in meeting their daily needs, particularly food, accommodation and other basic necessities, as some had grown old and could no longer fend for themselves.

Dzombe said supporting the veterans was a collective responsibility that required the participation of individuals, businesses and other stakeholders across the country.

He disclosed that this year’s Poppy Week fundraising campaign aims to raise approximately K500 million, which will go towards improving the living conditions of the veterans.

As part of his contribution, Dzombe donated K1 million towards the fundraising initiative and encouraged other well-wishers to emulate the gesture by contributing whatever amount they could afford.

He further urged Malawians not to shy away from soldiers conducting fundraising activities, but instead engage with them and offer support towards the cause.

Dzombe said the veterans deserved recognition and assistance for their contribution to peace and service, adding that collective efforts would help address some of the challenges they face in their daily lives.
