SENIOR CHIEF MALEMIA FOUND GUILTY IN CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCE

The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Zomba has found Senior Chief Malemia guilty on charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor and assisting in the termination of the girl’s pregnancy.

Senior Resident Magistrate Elijah Daniels said the court was satisfied that the prosecution had presented enough evidence to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The court has deferred sentencing and ordered both the State and the defence to submit written arguments on the appropriate punishment within 14 days, with submissions expected by July 24.

The offence of having sexual intercourse with a child carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, while assisting in the termination of a pregnancy attracts a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.
