CHAPONDA URGES SADC TO STRENGTHEN COMMITMENT TO PEACE, REGIONAL STABILITY

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. George Chaponda, has called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation to remain steadfast in promoting peace, democratic governance and regional cooperation across Southern Africa.

Dr. Chaponda, who is also the Chairperson of SADC, made the call during the official opening of the 28th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Committee in Salima. The meeting has attracted Cabinet ministers, including Dr. Feston Kaupa, senior government officials and other dignitaries from across the region.

He emphasized that the committee has a critical responsibility in ensuring that peace and security remain at the centre of SADC’s regional agenda, describing the organ as a key pillar in advancing the Community’s shared vision.

According to Dr. Chaponda, the progress made in promoting peace and stability over the years must be protected through sustained commitment, continuous dialogue and collective action among member states.

He urged delegates to remain focused on strengthening cooperation and working together to address emerging political, security and governance challenges facing the region.

Dr. Chaponda further stressed that regional unity is essential in safeguarding the achievements already made while building a stronger foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development.

“As leaders entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding our region’s peace and stability, we must continue to demonstrate unity of purpose in addressing emerging challenges while consolidating the gains we have made over the years,” said Dr. Chaponda.

The 28th Ordinary Meeting is expected to deliberate on key issues affecting politics, defence and security cooperation, with member states reaffirming their commitment to fostering peace, democratic governance and regional integration throughout Southern Africa.
