Police in Zomba are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 23-year-old University of Malawi Assistant Lecturer Mary Hamba Nyirenda, who was found dead at her home in Zakazaka, Zomba City, on 19 July 2026.
According to preliminary findings, Nyirenda underwent a surgical procedure at Banja La Mtsogolo Clinic on 30 June and later complained of severe pain after the wound reportedly reopened.
Police say family members discovered her hanging in her bedroom after she failed to respond to repeated calls, prompting them to force open the door.
Her body has since been taken to Zomba Central Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Nyirenda hailed from Chadza Village, Traditional Authority Chadza, in Lilongwe District.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
