Police in Chilipa, Mangochi District, have arrested a 29-year-old man, Jafali M’bwana, for allegedly stabbing to death his wife’s 23-year-old lover after finding them together inside his matrimonial home.
Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer, Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, confirmed the incident which has left Stambuli Village in Traditional Authority Chimwala in shock.
Daudi said the tragedy occurred during the night of Saturday, 25th July 2026.
“According to preliminary investigations, the deceased, identified as Sumaila Aubrey, was in a romantic relationship with M’bwana’s 38-year-old wife. Aubrey reportedly went to visit her that night believing the husband was still in Lilongwe where he had planned to spend the night,” she explained.
The publicist further said that M’bwana unexpectedly returned home around midnight. After knocking several times and getting no response, he forced his way into the house. Inside, police say he found Aubrey and his wife having sexual intercourse.
According to Daudi, it is alleged that an argument ensued before M’bwana produced a knife and stabbed Aubrey several times in the chest. The injured man managed to flee the house but collapsed a short distance away. He later died from his injuries.
The following morning, a villager on his way to the garden discovered Aubrey’s body lying naked in a pool of blood. The villager informed the village headman, who immediately reported the matter to Chilipa Police Unit.
Police officers, accompanied by medical personnel from Chilipa Health Centre, visited the scene. A post-mortem examination conducted at the health centre established that Aubrey died due to excessive blood loss caused by multiple stab wounds.
M’bwana was arrested shortly after and, according to police, admitted to committing the offence. He has since been charged with murder, contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code. He is expected to appear in court upon completion of all necessary paperwork. M’bwana hails from Bonongwe Village, Traditional Authority Chilipa, in Mangochi District.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public to seek legal and peaceful ways of resolving marital disputes, saying violence is not a solution to relationship problems. They urged communities to involve elders, police, and other relevant authorities when conflicts arise.
