LILONGWE — UTM president Dalitso Kabambe has described the Malawi Scorchers’ impressive campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as crucial to the country’s economic development.
Kabambe made the remarks today at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) after returning from Morocco, where he travelled to watch the Scorchers’ final match against Cameroon.
He said the team deserved a morale boost and continued support after putting Malawi on the international map through their historic performance.
“Currently, if one wants to travel outside the country, the banks will give you a maximum of USD 1,000, a clear indication that there is a short supply of forex. The Scorchers have brought us about USD 700,000. We should be proud,” said Kabambe.
He further recalled a time when Malawi attracted international attention for its economic growth and the Queens’ success on the international stage, saying the Scorchers have now carried that same positive image onto the global football scene.
“There was a time when Malawi was the talk of the town because of economic growth and the Queens’ performance at international level. Here we are with the Scorchers. We need to encourage and support them because they have marketed us,” he said.
The Scorchers are expected to return home tomorrow to a grand welcome following their historic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil and their remarkable runners-up finish at WAFCON.
Their achievement marks one of the most significant milestones in Malawi’s women’s football history and has generated widespread national pride.
