BLANTYRE, — Motorist Jeremiah Sikwane has called on authorities to intensify enforcement against motorcycles transporting charcoal along the M1 Road, saying the practice could increase the risk of road accidents.
Sikwane made the call as police continue an enforcement campaign targeting motorcycle operators who violate road traffic laws. During the first week of the operation, police impounded 2,626 motorcycles as part of efforts to encourage owners and operators to comply with traffic regulations.
According to Sikwane, motorcycles carrying charcoal along the M1 Road should be subjected to stricter checks because their activities could pose a danger to other road users.
He also urged traffic and environmental authorities to strengthen monitoring at checkpoints and ensure that motorcycles involved in charcoal transportation comply with all relevant laws before being allowed to proceed.
The call comes amid growing public support for the police operation. Motorists in Blantyre say the crackdown has begun to improve traffic flow and make roads easier and safer to navigate.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Alfred Chimthere said the operation is being conducted in collaboration with the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS).
Chimthere said the exercise is not only about impounding motorcycles but also about ensuring that operators understand and follow road traffic regulations.
He said many motorcycle operators do not have valid driving licences, while some motorcycles are not registered, violations that can contribute to road accidents.
Members of the public have welcomed the enforcement campaign, saying stronger compliance with traffic laws could help reduce accidents and improve road safety across the country.
